Hotel tips for Bangkok: accommodation for every budget

Posted on

Maybe you are like us on our first Bangkok trip: You are coming to Bangkok for the first time and have absolutely no idea which district, let alone which one Hotel you should stay overnight. Don’t worry: The metropolis of Bangkok can be really confusing at first glance.

Bangkok is huge and it’s not that easy to find your way around here . You won’t find a classic center in Bangkok. In the meantime, however, we have been to Bangkok countless times ourselves and in this article we will tell you our insider tips for hotels in Bangkok in every price range. Plus: Our recommendation as to which part of Bangkok is suitable for an overnight stay.

We have stayed in all of the hotels listed here ourselves. So you can trust us that our experiences are real.

1 . In which district should I stay? Bangkok has more than 8 million inhabitants and there are so many districts and Quarter that one quickly loses the overview (or does not get it at all). For a trip to Bangkok , roughly speaking, the following areas come into question:

Khao San Road/Banglamphu The The most famous backpacker street in Bangkok called Khao San Road is located in northern Bangkok, more precisely in the Banglamphu district. Banglamphu is what could be called Bangkok’s “Old Town”. (Try not to compare it to a European-style old town though.)

Many first-time visitors to Bangkok choose to stay along Khao San Road. Personally, we are not big fans of this street, which is now a huge pleasure mile for western tourists. Here you meet more vacationers than Thais and in the evenings you hardly get any rest thanks to the loud music. An alternative to the crowded Khao San Road is the quieter Rambuttri Road. Heading north off Khao San Road also takes you into the more pristine Banglamphu, which really has its charms.

Banglamphu is not connected to the Skytrain (=BTS). Especially in the rush hour this can happen tedious, because then Bangkok’s streets are hopelessly congested. Often one is then dependent on an expensive tuk tuk, which is at least a little more flexible in traffic. An alternative are the Chao Phraya Express boats: The pier (station “Phra Arthit”) is approximately 10 Walking distance from Khao San Road.

A benefit of Banglamphu: Two of the most important temples in Bangkok, the Grand Palace and the Wat Pho, are just about 10 minutes Travel time away by taxi. If necessary, you can even walk the route.

The area around Khao San Road is suitable for you if you: are traveling as a (low-budget) backpacker . like to party and nothing against loud music. gladly stay in touristy areas: Nowhere else in Bangkok will you meet as many travelers as here.

Siamese Besides Banglamphu, Siam is one of the most popular areas to stay in Bangkok. There is one reason above all: Siam is home to the “modern Bangkok” with its countless shopping malls. In addition, the two Skytrain lines cross here and you are well connected to public transport.

Some sights in Bangkok are not connected by Skytrain (=BTS) or MRT, such as the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. From Siam you can at least take the Skytrain to the river (Saphan Taksin station) and then take the Chao Phraya Express boat to reach both temples.

Even though Siam itself is accessible from High-rise buildings, there are quiet corners: The LiT Bangkok Hotel (details below) is located in a quiet side street far away from the hustle and bustle.

Hotel in Siam that we can recommend (detailed review below):

LiT BANGKOK Hotel The District Siam is suitable for you if you: would like to go shopping in Bangkok. I like you in more “western” areas want to stay. in Bangkok you will often be traveling with the Skytrain.

Silom & Sathorn Road The district of Silom is quite large and there are no clear boundaries. Along the Silom Road and the Sathorn Road (also called Sathon Road) there are a lot of hotels between the river bank and Lumphini Park. Since the area is something of Bangkok’s financial center, this area is characterized by high-rise buildings. A large number of hotels (mostly 4 and 5-star hotels) are also located in high-rise buildings.

Apart from the direct Skytrain connection, there are not as much to explore in Silom as in other neighborhoods in Bangkok. Patpong, Bangkok’s disreputable red-light district and night market is also located in the north-eastern part of Silom near Saladaeng station. A tourist attraction is located further east: We always like to visit the Hindu temple called Sri Maha Mariamman.

Even if we read again and again, We cannot confirm that Silom is not suitable for Bangkok newcomers. We enjoy the direct skytrain access and absolutely love all the hotels we have stayed in here. In addition, you always have to cover unbelievable distances in Bangkok anyway, so a few more Skytrain stations don’t matter.

Hotels in Silom that we can recommend (detailed reviews below):

W Hotel Bangkok Mode Sathorn The district of Silom is suitable for you if you: looking for a strategically convenient starting point to explore the entire city: You are relatively close to the pier (Saphan Taksin) from where you can access the Grand Palace and Wat Arun can be reached by boat. With the Skytrain you don’t have to go far to the big shopping centers in Siam (MBK, Siam Center etc.). don’t mind that Silom itself doesn’t have any major tourist highlights. the night district of Patpong want to see (Warning: Silom is relatively large and the district is near the station “Saladaeng”).

Sukhumvit One part of the city that we recently discovered is Sukhumvit. By this we mean the area around the two BTS stations “Nana” and “Asok”. The busy Sukhumvit Road is one of the most important main roads in Bangkok. In terms of traffic, all hell is going on here. But in the small streets (“Sois”) you are quickly away from the hustle and bustle.

In Sukhumvit you will find some hotels of international chains, but also a lot of individual hotels. One of our favorite small boutique hotels, the Tints of Blue Hotel (details below) is also located in Sukhumvit.

Sukhumvit is one of the most popular nightlife areas in Bangkok. There are countless bars, pubs and restaurants here. The less beautiful side of Sukhumvit can be found in the famous-infamous “Soi Cowboy”, the most famous red light district in Sukhumvit.

One of the most popular shopping centers in Bangkok is also in Sukhumvit: the huge terminal 30 is laid out in an airport style – so the floors are known after famous destinations worldwide.

Hotel in Sukhumvit that we can recommend (detailed review below):

Tints of Blue Hotel Sukhumvit district is suitable for you if you: hectic big city feeling like. like to go out in the evening s: Some famous rooftop bars including Octave Rooftop Bar are located in Sukhumvit. don’t mind that you are relatively far from the river and from the most important temples.

2. Hotel tips for luxury hotels in Bangkok Room price: Minimum 331 Euro per night

The W Hotel Bangkok The W Hotel Bangkok is a luxury hotel with stylish flair. In keeping with the “W Hotel Chain”, great value is placed on design and unusualness. The W Hotel is – like most of the large hotels in Silom – a high-rise building. This means that if you’re lucky, you’ll get a great view of the city.

We booked the second best category (“Spectacular”). We had a great view of Bangkok from this room. Our double room was huge and the bed was incredibly comfortable. The pool is unfortunately not an infinity pool like in many hotels in this price range, but you can enjoy underwater music here – not bad either, right?

The breakfast is a dream: from quiche Lorraine to umpteen yoghurt varieties in mason jars, donuts, pancakes, muffins, the most delicious fruits, dozens of warm dishes, different types of bread, juices in small glass bottles and a muesli bar had everything you could wish for. There are also countless hot dishes (e.g. Asian dishes).

The location of the W Hotel Bangkok The W Hotel Bangkok is located in the Silom district directly on the well-known Sathorn Road approx. 3 minutes’ walk from the BTS station “Chong Nonsi” away. So you can reach all destinations along the BTS and MRT very quickly.

Who is the W for? Hotel Bangkok suitable? We can recommend the W Hotel Bangkok if you are looking for a very modern and stylish hotel in Bangkok that stands out from the crowd. If you like staying in traditional hotels, then the W Hotel Bangkok is not suitable.

Anantara Bangkok Riverside Anantara Bangkok Riverside is the perfect hotel for you if you want to escape the big city chaos Want to escape Bangkok. The hotel is located outside of downtown directly on the Chao Phraya F luss. It’s not a high-rise – like many hotels in Bangkok – but a extensive, green oasis. The design at Anantara Bangkok Riverside is very traditional.

We have stayed at Anantara Bangkok Riverside three times and Booked both the cheapest room category and those with a river view. We felt comfortable in every room. The beds are a dream – we have seldom slept so well. The buffet breakfast is incredibly varied. You can even have breakfast here on the terrace overlooking the river (although of course you have to get used to the high temperature and humidity in Bangkok).

Location of Anantara Bangkok Riverside Located in the south of Bangkok right on the Chao Phraya River. There is no BTS/Skytrain or MRT station nearby, but the hotel offers its private shuttle boat. This takes you regularly to the “Saphan Taksin” station (journey time approx. minutes) and in the evening to the Asiatique Night Market. At “Saphan Taksin” station you can change to the Skytrain or to the Chao Phraya Express boats.

Who is Anantara Bangkok Riverside for? We would recommend Anantara Bangkok Riverside to anyone staying at the hotel Peace from the hustle and bustle of the big city is looking for. The hotel is a real tropical oasis and hectic Bangkok seems far away as soon as you enter the hotel. It is also very suitable for families, because the pool is huge and children simply feel at home here.

3. Hotel tips for upper class hotels in Bangkok Room price: Between 100 and 150 Euro per night

Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok The Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok is located – as the name suggests reveals – right on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. The Chatrium is one of the comparatively affordable 5 star hotels in Bangkok, but it doesn’t quite measure up to the Anantara or the W Hotel, which is why we’ve broken it down a category.

The Chatrium is a typical “high-rise hotel”. The cool thing here is that you can enjoy a great view of the river from some of the rooms. We stayed in the Grand Room Skyline River View category. These rooms are on the higher floors, so the view is well worth seeing. Our room was with 21m² also huge and very comfortable.

The breakfast is very diverse and there is everything your heart desires, from sushi to desserts. Our only gripe is the hotel’s design (that’s whining on a high note, though): the interior just doesn’t quite suit our tastes. But tastes are known to be different and apart from that we can really recommend the Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok!

The location of the Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok The Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok is located directly on the Chao Phraya River, a little south of the hustle and bustle, but still very central. With the hotel’s own shuttle boat, which runs regularly throughout the day, you can get from the hotel to the “Saphan Taksin” station in less than 5 minutes. There you can change to the Skytrain or the Chao Phraya Express boats and are therefore well connected to public transport in Bangkok.

Who is the Chatrium Hotel Riverside suitable for? If you enjoy staying in a 5 star hotel but don’t want to spend a lot of money, then we can highly recommend the Chatrium Hotel Riverside Bangkok. The location is great and you just feel at home here.

LiT BANGKOK Hotel The LiT BANGKOK is a modern 4-star design hotel in Bangkok. It is in a super central location near the famous shopping malls MBK, Siam Center & Co., yet it is in a quiet side street.

The rooms are very modern. So if you’re looking for a hotel with Thai flair, then you’ve come to the wrong place at the LiT Hotel. If you prefer it puristic and stylish, you will feel very comfortable.

The pool is unfortunately not on the roof of the hotel, nevertheless, it is great for recovering a little after a hard day. However, places in the sun are rare – especially in the afternoon.

The location of the LiT BANGKOK Hotel LiT BANGKOK Hotel is located in Siam district. The famous shopping mall MBK-Center and the nearest BTS station (“National Stadium”) are just a few minutes’ walk away. It is also not far to the Siam Center, the Siam Paragon and the Siam Discovery.

Who is the LiT BANGKOK for Hotel suitable? If you would like to do a lot of shopping in Bangkok and stay in a stylish, very young hotel, then we can offer you recommend the LiT Hotel. The pool area in particular is very small and mostly covered. If you want to lie in the sun or your children like to play by the pool, we would recommend a more spacious hotel.

Mode Sathorn The Mode Sathorn is a modern 4-star- “High-rise” hotel , which is located directly on the street of the same name. It is therefore in an area where many hotels in Bangkok are located. The big advantage: the BTS station is right in front of the hotel. That’s perfect, of course.

The rooms themselves are very modern furnished (for our taste, yes too modern). The huge panoramic windows are great. With a bit of luck you will have a similarly great view as we do and you can admire the skyline of Bangkok every day. The pool area is very cool and also has a nice view of the city.

The location of Mode Sathorn Mode Sathorn is located in Silom district. Directly in front of the hotel entrance is the BTS station “Surasak”. From there it is only one station to the boat pier “Saphan Taksin” (but you can easily travel the route to Go walking). From “Saphan Taksin” you can, for example, reach the Royal Palace super with the Chao Phraya Express boat.

For whom is the Mode Sathorn suitable? If you want a very comfortable modern room in Bangkok, then you’ve come to the right place.

4. Hotel tips for mid-range hotels in Bangkok Room price: Up to 100 Euro per night

Tints of Blue Hotel Tints of Blue Hotel is a affordable boutique hotel located in Sukhumvit district. As the name suggests, the color “blue” dominates in this hotel. But don’t worry, everything isn’t just dipped in a pot of paint here, but the hotel is furnished in a very minimalistic and stylish way: Sometimes it’s blue tiles, sometimes a blue armchair, a blue wall or a blue stool.

The furnishing of the rooms is very individual. There are different room types – some with brick walls, some with tiled floors, some very puristic and some with oriental flair. The beds are comfortable and the room is generally very comfortable. We felt comfortable from the first moment.

There’s even a pool and a mini-fitness center on the roof. The breakfast is served on the ground floor near the lobby and is small but fine. All in all we found the hotel to be very pleasant. Of course, there are a few small points where you notice that you are not staying in an international hotel chain here – for example, there is no bar on the roof and the reception is no longer manned from late in the evening. But to be honest: We would prefer that a thousand times over to being danced about all the time.

Current update (March 2020): Currently there is a construction site next door. Apparently the noise level is limited, but we would recommend asking for a quiet room after booking.

The location of the Tints of Blue Hotel The hotel is located approx. 10 Walking distance from BTS station “Asok”. To shorten the way a bit, there is a hotel’s own tuk-tuk service that will take you to Sukhumvit Road if necessary. In the district there is actually everything you need: lots of restaurants and cool bars (e.g. Above Eleven), a large shopping center (terminal 21) and the connection to public transport thanks to the BTS station.

Who is the Tints of Blue Hotel for suitable? If you want a small boutique hotel away from the big, international hotel chains are looking for, you will feel very comfortable in the Tints of Blue Hotel. During our visit there were mainly younger people (between 30 and 40), couples and families as guests.

5. Cheap accommodation: Tips for hostels and guest houses in Bangkok Room price: until 40 Euro per night

The Companion Hostel Our by far best chance find for cheap accommodation was the Companion Hostel. We ended up here looking for a nice but affordable room with a private bathroom. We were two of the very first guests, because the hostel was only at the end 2017 opened. During our first stay we extended it to a week because we were so have felt good. And: In February 1200 we have been there again. That says it all, doesn’t it?

The Companion Hostel is very bright and tastefully furnished. It is flooded with light and you feel at home from the first moment – but that is also due to the two owners, a young Thai couple. They are maybe the nicest and most helpful hosts we have ever met while traveling.

The only downside of the Companion Hostel is that there is a small leather factory in the neighboring building. During the day (with the exception of Sundays) people work here and you can hear that in the hostel. It’s a bit like construction noise, but it didn’t really bother us personally, since the most of the time anyway.

Unfortunately there are only three private double rooms in the Companion Hostel. Two of them are on the 1st floor and one on the ground floor . (If possible, try to get a room on the top floor. It’s generally quieter here.) The rest of the beds are in dormitories, but they also made a great impression.

The location of Companion Hostel The Companion Hostel is located in District of Wongwian Yai near the BTS station of the same name. The district is on the other side of the Chao Phraya River and is rather atypical and unknown among travelers . That’s why we were skeptical at first, but our concerns were unfounded.

Wongwian Yai is pretty authentic and there are some damn delicious restaurants here, including our favorite pad thai shop. Also, the BTS station is only about 5 minutes walk from the hostel. In just two stops you can reach Saphan Taksin.

Who is the Companion Hostel suitable for? The double rooms are perfect for young couples who don’t want to travel extremely low budget, but still want to want to treat yourself to a certain level of comfort. We would recommend the beds in the dormitories especially to single travelers who are looking for a cheap place to stay. We had the feeling that acquaintances and friends were made here pretty quickly.
