In this blog article we give you our personal tips for really great cafés and restaurants in Budapest. By the way: This article is a best-of of all our Budapest trips. We have been there so many times and keep adding our favourites.
1. The best restaurants in Budapest The choice of restaurants in Budapest is huge . From cheap street food to star cuisine, everything is there. In this chapter we show you our favorite lunch and dinner dishes.
Mazel Tov The Mazel Tov is one of those restaurants whose atmosphere inspired us from the very first moment. It is tucked away in the covered courtyard of a rather run down building. But once you walk in, you can’t stop being amazed.
Right at the entrance you can look over the chefs’ shoulders – arouses anticipation of the delicious food. Israeli cuisine is served – from hummus and salads to shakshuka and grilled dishes. Daily from 20 There will be live music at noon – the icing on the cake, so to speak.
We recommend you absolutely to reserve if you want to come in the evening. The Mazel Tov is sometimes fully booked several days in advance. At lunchtime you can often stop by without a reservation.
Address: Akácfa utca 45, 1074 Budapest
Website & Reservation: Mazel Tov
Dobrumba Our very favorite new discovery in Budapest is the great Dobrumba. There’s excellent Mediterranean and oriental cuisine, among others from Israel, Turkey, Lebanon and Morocco.
The menu with the many mezzes (cold and warm) invites you to let off steam and right away to order for the whole table to share. And that’s exactly what we would recommend to you. All the dishes we tried were excellent!
Very important: the restaurant is rightly incredibly popular. Therefore you should either go directly to 12 Be on site when the restaurant opens or best reserve right away.
Address: Dob utca 5, 1075 Budapest
Website & Reservation: Dobrumba
Street Food in Budapest Street Food Karaván Pretty cool what you can find in Budapest! The Street Food Karaván is a collection of some Food Trucks in the yard of a quiet side street. Primarily fast food is offered: burgers, wraps, pasta. The atmosphere is quite relaxed, although it can get quite crowded in the evenings and there is very little seating. We still have a clear recommendation!
Address: Kazinczy utca 18, 1181 Budapest
Vegan Street Food Garden We like it even better in the Vegan Street Food Garden. There are also some food trucks here, with only vegan dishes being prepared. The atmosphere is quite hip and very chilled. There are several seating options here, so that we were even able to get a table for the two of us in the evening. Highly recommended!
Address: Dob utca 40, 1073 Budapest
Street Food KaravánVegan Street Food Garden Hummus Bar You want to eat quickly, cheaply and really well in Budapest? Then we can recommend the Hummus Bar. There are several branches, we were in the one on October 6 utca. You can sit inside and outside here.
Inside the ambiance is a bit like a fast food place but the food is really excellent. Among other things, there are Falafel, hummus and salads. Clear recommendation for the Shakshuka!
Address: October 6th utca 14, Budapest (but there are many other branches)
Hoppa! Bistro Michelin-starred cuisine at fair prices – that’s what awaits you in the Hoppá Bistro. This stylish eatery doesn’t have a star rating from Michelin, but it does have a highly recommended rating. And we can only agree.
We were here in the evening and had a fantastic meal. Hungarian cuisine is served – albeit interpreted in a very modern and creative way. The selection is small but fine. In any case, there is something for every taste. We personally found the desserts to be excellent.
A little tip: At lunchtime, a three-course menu becomes unbeatable price of around seven euros. If you find better value for money in Budapest, please let us know. Highly recommended!
Address : Andrássy utca 40, 1061 BudapestWebsite & Reservation: Hoppá! Bistro
Il Terzo Cerchio If you feel like Italian cuisine, then we can highly recommend Il Terzo Cerchio. We were there a few years ago and happened to end up there again last time.
There is – oh wonder – pizza and pasta, both very tasty. We also liked the tiramisu for dessert. Conclusion: A pleasantly calm, very good Italian restaurant.
Address: Dohány street 40, 1074 Budapest
Könyv Bar & Restaurant The Könyv Bar & Restaurant is relatively expensive for Budapest, but the concept is really coherent. You sit here in the middle of bookshelves. The ambience is very special and fortunately not fancy at all.
Multi-course menus are served, and you can also order à la carte. Pretty bizarre: the menu is inspired by books. There are also vegetarian, vegan and even gluten-free options. We liked it very much.
All in all: Highly recommended if you are looking for a somewhat unusual location. In the evening you should make a reservation, because the place is quite popular.
Address: Dob utca 40, 1075 Budapest
Website & Reservation: Könyv Bar & Restaurant
2. The best cafes in Budapest Every time we are in Budapest, new amazing cafes have opened. Budapest has become a real coffee house city. But where’s the best coffee?
Espresso Embassy Puristic, young and damn good coffee – that is the Espresso Embassy. Whenever we are in Budapest, we stop by at least once and prefer to take a pack of freshly roasted coffee to take home.
The café is particularly popular with young people: Many sit here with their Macbooks or meet up with friends for afternoon coffee. In the meantime, the location has been enlarged and yet it is often difficult to find a
Big plus point: You can also get our beloved Oatly oat milk here. The prices are rather high by Hungarian standards, but you know us: we are happy to pay a little more for good coffee.
Address: Arany Janos utca 18, Budapest
My Little Melbourne Coffee A little Australian feeling in the middle of Budapest. This hipster café has been insanely popular for years. There’s excellent coffee and a really delicious chocolate cake. If you’re in the area, be sure to stop by.
Address: Madách Imre utca 3, 1181 Budapest
Madal Cafe Excellent coffee is also available in very hip Madal Cafe. The Iced Flat White was a real blessing in the hot temperatures. The Madal Cafe now has three locations – we ourselves were at the one at the address Ferenciek tere. There is a fairly large guest garden here (unfortunately on a fairly busy road). Be sure to stop by if you’re looking for a caffeine boost.
Address: Ferenciek tere 3, 1053 Budapest (There are three locations in total.)
Kuglóf Although it is right in the city center (a few steps from the tourist promenade Vaci utca away), wi I definitely recommend Café Kuglóf. It’s wonderful to sit outside, the cappuccino tastes very good and the interior is – typically shabby-chic – really cute.
Address: Piarista köz 1, Budapest
3. The coolest bars for the evening Szimpla Kert For those who want to go out for a drink in the late afternoon or in the evening, we have a great tip, which is no longer really an insider tip (Hello over 100.000 Fans on Facebook!). Anyway, it’s fabulous there, at the Szimpla Kert. A demolished house was turned into a trendy place, a successful mixture of “fucked up” and “hip”.
The Szimpla Kert is a place that you would think more in Berlin than in Budapest. And so is the audience: a lot of English is spoken, in between a little Hungarian and here and there German-speaking touristsmake themselves known. You feel good in the inner courtyard, the cheap beer makes its contribution. Be sure to visit!
Address: Kazinczy utca 14, 1181 Budapest
Rooftop Bars in Budapest Meanwhile there are really cool rooftop bars in Budapest. For example, we can recommend the 45 Bar. Here you can enjoy the sunset with a delicious cocktail. Also the Toprum Bar, which belongs to our hotel – the Rum Hotel Budapest – is really worth seeing.
