Ang Thong Marine National Park consists of 30 tropical islands, to the west of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan are in the Gulf of Thailand. The islands in the Marine National Park are mostly uninhabited.
One of Thailand’s postcard motifs awaits you here: The green-covered islands tower majestically out of the turquoise-blue sea . The beaches in the national park are among the most beautiful we have ever been to in Thailand.
How can I visit the national park? Most people (including us) visit the national park as part of a guided boat tour. Tours mainly depart from Koh Samui, but also offered from Koh Phangan. Due to the distance, boat tours last all day (approx. 8-10 Hours). We’ll tell you in a moment which tour we can recommend.
It’s rather unusual, but it’s also possible to stay overnight in Ang Thong Marine National Park. You spend the night here in a simple hut or in a tent. You will definitely have to lower your comfort level for the duration of your stay, but you will experience the national park in the morning and evening hours without any visitors – a highlight that will definitely be remembered.
Which tour operator to Ang Thong Marine National Park? Most important tip first: Think carefully about which provider you are going to take your tour to the Ang Thong Marine national park From impersonal excursions in huge boats to exclusive tours on a sailing ship, everything is included.
We ourselves can wholeheartedly recommend the tour with Boutique Yachting, which starts from Koh Samui. As the name suggests, they want to pamper their guests a little here. In other words: You get towels, drinks, refreshing towels, fruit, biscuits, and so on. A small buffet will be set up on the ship for breakfast and lunch. Especially the lunch is really excellent.
The big advantage of this tour: The group size is small and the ship is pleasantly spacious. Besides us there were maybe 25 additional guests on board. The day trip is very personal from start to finish – no trace of mass processing. The employees are also amazing: They really did everything to make everyone feel comfortable. To give you a better idea of how the day trip works, we will tell you more about the individual stops in the next chapter.
2. Day Trip by Yacht to Ang Thong Marine National Park: Our Experience The day trip to Ang Thong Marine National Park starts relatively early with a pick-up from your hotel in Koh Samui. Arrived at the pier, it is already on board. A delicious breakfast awaits you there.
Unhurriedly, the yacht sets course for the national park. During the crossing you can, for example, make yourself comfortable on a lounger on deck, read something and enjoy the wind.
Koh Wua Ta Lap The first stop on our boat trip is the beautiful island Koh Wua Ta Lap, which is one of the most famous of the national park. Already here our expectations of the island paradise were exceeded by far. The beach on Koh Wua Ta Lap is just heavenly beautiful!
If you are motivated to do sports, then we recommend that you do the hike to the viewpoint in to attack. After the sweaty ascent (approx. 10 until 30 minutes) you will be greeted with a fabulous view of the islands of the Ang Thong Marine National Park rewards.
We decided against the ascent for convenience (and because we loved the beach so much). Unfortunately – because we then googled for pictures of the view and were quite annoyed. We definitely have to come back.
You have about an hour of free time on the island anyway. Then it’s back to the yacht in the motorized dinghy , where the cook of the house (or ship) starts with a delicious lunch . waiting for you Rarely have we dined as well as we did on a day trip. Big plus: There was also enough vegetarian selection.
Koh Mae Ko Well strengthened, it goes to the next island called Koh Mae Ko, which awaits you with a special feature. The island is home to the so-called Emerald Lake – a emerald green lagoon, connected to the sea by a tunnel system.
For the best view of Emerald Lake you have to take a short but steep climb. The path leads up a rather daringly built and somewhat outdated staircase. But don’t worry: after about 10 minutes you will be rewarded with a wonderful panoramic view.
Ok, I’ll jump now
Back on the yacht we got the opportunity to jump from the bow into the turquoise sea. Awesome – that’s what we call perfect conditions for a cooling off after the hike. Romeo couldn’t get enough. Again and again he climbed all the way to the top of the ship and then jumped down at full speed.
Sunset off the coast of Koh Samui After the eventful day, you will then comfortably return to Koh Samui . Now there is only one thing left to do: enjoy the sunset with a cool drink (or two) from the ship.
The crew even hoisted the sails, so that it suddenly became very quiet around us on the wide ocean. And while we were sitting on deck and thinking about traveling with two dear people from Germany, the sun slowly disappeared behind the horizon. What a fantastic end to our day trip!
