Travel Bloggers Reveal: The Places You MUST Visit In Europe!

March 17, 2015

Travel Bloggers Reveal: The Places You MUST Visit In Europe! It’s no secret that Europe is the most popular continent for tourism around the world. In fact, millions of people each year visit Europe to marvel at its beauty. The continent has everything a travel lover could wish for – incredible architecture, a blend of cultures, captivating history and an array of famous cuisines. It’s these factors that make Europe irresistible to travellers around the world.

Recently I reached out to some of my favourite travel bloggers to reveal their favourite European destinations as part of my new Travel Bloggers Reveal series. I received such a diverse list of places from around Europe. Some of these places are popular tourist spots, where as others tend to fly a little under the radar – all of which show why Europe is a dream destination. From watching the sunset over the cliffs of Santorini to swimming in the clear blue water of Korčula…

Here are some of the places you MUST visit in Europe!

1. Mostar, Bosnia

Travel Bloggers Reveal: The Places You MUST Visit In Europe!

“No matter how many times I walk down the old cobbled streets in Mostar, or cross the Old Bridge, I am always in awe with this magical place that has an East meets West ambience. One minute it might feel like you are in Istanbul, another you have been transported to Vienna. Mostar has both Ottoman & Austrian-Hungarian influences because the Ottoman Empire ruled the country from the late 1400’s until about the late 1800’s when it fell to Austro-Hungarian rule. The Old bridge (Stari Most) is the towns famous landmark, and deservedly so. The town received its name from the bridge keepers, the “mostari”, who kept a lookout from their towers. With its fairytale scenery, great organic food, and friendly locals, every great trip to Europe, should include a trip to Mostar. Check out my top 10 things to do in Mostar.”

2. Santorini, Greece

Travel Bloggers Reveal: The Places You MUST Visit In Europe!

“All travellers that return from an extended overseas trip understand the most popular question to be asked of you is, ‘what was your favourite destination?’ It is with great excitement and my starry-eyed look that I told every one of them that it was Greece that ultimately captured my heart. Greece was one of those amazing, beautiful and enchanting countries where I was immediately drawn in; the rich history, sights, delicious food and kindness of the people were enough to convince me to visit a million times over. My favourite destination in Greece was the captivating and stunning island of Santorini, and in particular the town of Oia. The town of Oia was just like stepping into a picture perfect postcard, hosting the most beautiful, picturesque and awe-inspiring views of the caldera, which if you catch at sunset, your heart will melt away just like mine did. Watching the sunset over the caldera was one of those surreal and awe-struck travel moments, where I realised I had fallen in love with Greece.”

3. Seville, Spain

Travel Bloggers Reveal: The Places You MUST Visit In Europe!

“As the capital of Andalusia and Spain’s fourth largest city, Seville is home to a traditional Spanish culture and a vibrant atmosphere, perfect for exploring its rich history, beautiful architecture and flamenco flavor. I had the chance to study abroad in Seville for four months, where the city became more than a home. From relaxing by the famous Guadalquivir River to exploring sites like its famous cathedral, I was able to absorb the engaging rhythm of the sunny city. If you have a chance to visit, don’t miss trying Spain’s famous tapas, visiting Plaza de España, touring the Alcázar of Sevilla, or getting lost in the historic, winding streets. Overall, Seville is a wonderful gem that really shows all the color of Spain’s alluring culture.”

4. Annecy, France

Travel Bloggers Reveal: The Places You MUST Visit In Europe!

“Annecy, France is one of the most underrated travel destinations in Europe and is seemingly straight from a storybook.  A popular destination with Europeans, the village is still largely unknown to those of us in North America.  How Europeans have kept Annecy is a secret is beyond me, because I was immediately smitten upon my arrival! Annecy is located in the French Alps, only 45 minutes from Geneva Switzerland.  The picturesque, historic village stands on the banks of Lake Annecy, an aqua glacier lake more striking than any body of water I’ve ever laid eyes on.   After strolling the cobblestone lanes and admiring the pastel colored dwellings, drive up the mountain to marvel at your surroundings from above and dine on traditional Savoy cuisine.  No visit to Annecy would be complete without a stroll along the swan-filled lake and a boat ride to admire the stately chateaus that dot the lake’s shoreline.”

5. Budapest, Hungary

Travel Bloggers Reveal: The Places You MUST Visit In Europe!

“Budapest is one of those cities where you can just feel the history. Walking along the Danube River, over the famous Chain Bridge, up to Buda Castle and through Heroes’ Square, I felt overwhelmed with the amount of history that has passed and how well-preserved and significant these landmarks looked. Budapest claims the world’s first subway that is still running to this day. One of the most popular attractions is spending the day in the ancient thermal baths. Even the nightlife screams of history. Some of the best pubs are set in old ruins of giant apartment blocks with plants growing up the sides and years and years of decorations added to the walls. It’s an amazing experience to feel as if you’ve seen the history that we’ve read about in our history books since a young age. Budapest is a city you’ll never forget.”

6. Venice, Italy

Travel Bloggers Reveal: The Places You MUST Visit In Europe!

“Venice is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in the world and also one of my favourite European destinations. Famous for its intricate network of sparkling blue canals, romantic backdrops, chapels both big and small, and of course, the charming gondoliers; is it any wonder that millions of tourists visit each year? The atmosphere is unbelievable and transports you into a world populated by all those who have gone before, the Romantic poets, the Renaissance artists, musicians, architects and artisans. At every turn a surprise awaits, grand piazzas, famous bridges, narrow walkways, busy canals and sun-dappled backwaters. History oozes out of the pores of this enchanted island and captures the soul and emotions of the visitor. The City of Love, the City of Bridges, whatever you want to call it, is in a world of its own and one that should be on every person’s travel list!”

7. Mont Saint Michel, France

Travel Bloggers Reveal: The Places You MUST Visit In Europe!

“This iconic island is a gem to discover on a trip to France. Mont Saint Michel is an island commune located in Normandy, in the north of France and is one of France’s most recognizable landmarks. In fact Mont Saint Michel and its bay are part of the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites and is a popular destination for pilgrims and tourists alike. Mont Saint Michel is an extraordinary experience and a lot of work has been carried out over the years to enhance visitors experience on the island. A gradual walk through many small alleys and lots of steps leads to some magnificent views from the top of the Abbey. Each level one goes up brings something new to see and explore with stops for food and drinks along the way. The Abbey and monastery may not be as elaborate as say Notre Dame but they are beautiful in their own right.”

8. Reykjavik, Iceland

Travel Bloggers Reveal: The Places You MUST Visit In Europe!

“I didn’t know what to expect when I visited Reykjavik. It was mainly the cheap airfare (£100 return from Bristol with Easyjet) that had lured me there. However, from the moment I landed I was in love. The first thing I did when I got off the plane was hop on a bus to the Blue Lagoon. I highly recommend this, it is spectacular and on the way to Reykjavik. As stereotypical as it sounds, the people really do look like beautiful vikings. But what about the city? It’s unbelievably colourful. The buildings are small and bohemian. It feels more like a town than a capital city, but don’t let that fool you, Reykjavik boasts some world-class restaurants and bars and places to stay. From Reykjavik you can do day trips to see some of the most stunning natural wonders the world has to offer; waterfalls, glaciers and even the northern lights. If you want anymore info on this amazing city check out my full blog post. “

9. Sibiu, Romania

Travel Bloggers Reveal: The Places You MUST Visit In Europe!

“While visiting some friends in Romania, I took a road trip and spent two days in a cute city called Sibiu. From the minute I stepped on the cobblestone streets of Sibiu I was in love. It feels like a typical, cute, quaint European city. Colorful. Vibrant. Fresh. Sunny. In the center of Sibiu, we drank coffee outside in the town square, with a view of a fountain, and dapper old men feeding the birds. Be sure to climb the clock tower to get the most breath-taking view. I considered staying in this town forever. To see my scrapbook of all our Romanian adventures, click here.”

10. Hallstat, Austria

Travel Bloggers Reveal: The Places You MUST Visit In Europe!

“A shockingly beautiful lake village nestled in the Alps, Hallstatt, Austria is the true definition of European charm. Boating on the Hallstatt Lake was surely the most scenic boat ride I’ve ever had and bucket list worthy for every traveler. Just a short drive from Salzburg, be sure to overnight there to get the true feeling of the village. Beware, word is getting out and it’s growing in popularity quickly – so popular, in fact, that a fake Hallstatt was constructed in China at the cost of $940 million.”

– Margo from The Overseas Escape

 11. Korčula, Croatia

Travel Bloggers Reveal: The Places You MUST Visit In Europe!“Stunning blue water, vineyards just a bike ride from the beach and a charming old walled in city, Korčula is a European gem. I will admit I did not expect much from Korčula but it more than surprised me, I fell in love with the island as soon as I arrived! Days spent swimming in the clear blue water, wine tasting at local vineyards in the afternoon, and eating the most delicious pasta dish in the old city for dinner. It was amazing! If you are looking for a place that is beautiful, not crowded, full of things to do and see, and still relax, Korčula is the perfect destination for you!”

12. Paris, France

Travel Bloggers Reveal: The Places You MUST Visit In Europe!

“The iconic Audrey Hepburn once said, “Paris is always a good idea” – and she could not have been more right. Paris truly is a magical city, and it’s a place that everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime. The city of love instantly lured me in with its stunning architecture, impressive art and sophisticated and stylish lifestyle. Most importantly, I love the delicious foods and the cafe culture of the city. I could spend hours discovering the mouth-watering pastries, devouring the sweet chocolate and macaroons, or perhaps lazing in the picturesque gardens snacking on a cheese baguette with a glass of wine.  To me, Paris is just an enchanting place. Paris, je’taime!”

I definitely agree with adding Brugges to the list. Or Ghent, which has a similar feel to Brugges, but with a few less tourists.

    • Reply A Life Passport March 18, 2015 at 5:54 pm

I agree with Bruges, but would also suggest nearby Ghent. The same quirky charm as Bruges but with less tourists! There’s a bit student population there too, which means there’s a very vibrant nightlife.

I love the list definitely some of my favorite spots. We had so much fun in Budapest, were awed by Santorini and Mont St Michel, and enjoyed other off the beaten path places. I would add Lucca to this list. It is a really fun place to visit and so close to Florence. Riding a bike on the city wall was so amazing and the food divine. I also love Corfu, Greece. Totally different feel than other greek islands and being there during easter was amazing.
